Idrakpur Water Fort in Munshiganj, Bangladesh.
Rising Bengal Dhaka Bureau: This historical monument is located in the village of Deobhog in the Bikrampur area in the heart of Munshiganj district of Bangladesh The name of the area was Idrakpur at the time of the construction of the fort.
The Jal Fort was built in 1660 by Mir Jumla, a general and Subedar of Bengal during the reign of Emperor Emperor Aurangzeb, to protect the then Bengal trading cities of Dhaka and Narayanganj from attacks by Portuguese and Magh pirates.
Within 3 km of the fort, which is 87 metres long and 60 metres wide, are the Ichamati, Meghna, Dhaleshwari and Shitalakshya rivers There is a tunnel said to have led to the Lalbagh Fort from the fort, although modern archaeologists believe it was a staircase leading to a vaulted chamber that housed the armoury.
After the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, the fort was taken over by the British, after which it was declared an archaeological monument by the British government in 1909 The fort is currently maintained by the Bangladesh Archaeological Directorate.
