The country is called "Bharatavarsha," where brother Bharat, who ruled in his name with the footwear of grandfather Rama on the throne, again jumped into the battlefield like King Harshavardhana, risking his life to rescue his sister Rajyashri from the enemy. Later, Shashanka established an independent kingdom at Gauda before 606 CE. The capital was Karnasubarna (now Rangamati), 6 miles southwest of Berhampore in Murshidabad district. Shashanka conquered Dandabhukti (present-day Medinipur district) in the south, Utkala in Orissa, and the Kongod kingdom in Ganjam district. The Kongod kingdom was ruled by the kings of the Shailodbhava dynasty as vassals of Shashanka. Shashanka also conquered the Magadha kingdom in the west. Gaur's arch-enemies were the Maukhirajas. Maukhiraj Grahvarma married Rajyashri, daughter of the powerful Pushyabhuti-descendant Sthanashvara (Thaneswar) Prabhakavardhana. Kamaruparaja Bhaskaravarma befriended Thaneswararaja, again fearing Shashanka. Shashanka did not remain silent. He also made peace with Malvaraj Devagupta, the king of Ganjam.

Shashanka then marched west, capturing Varanasi. Devagupta marched from Malava to Kanyakubja or Kannauj. The next event, according to Banabhatta's "Harshacharita," was the death of the Thaneswararaja Prabhakara-vardhana, and the accession of his eldest son Rajyavardhana. At this time, messengers from Kanyakubja arrived, reporting that Malavaraja Devagupta had defeated and killed Kanyakubjara Grahavarma in battle, taken Rani Rajyashri captive, and was about to invade Thaneswar.

On hearing this, Rajyavardhana, with his younger brother Harshavardhana in charge of the kingdom, rushed with ten thousand cavalry to rescue his sister Rajyashri. On the way, he met Malavaraja Devagupta. Rajyavardhana lost Malavaraja in battle and sent many of his soldiers to Thaneswar. In fact, Malavaraja Devagupta then conquered Kanyakubja and started a war against Thaneswararaja without waiting for Shashanka. Upon reaching Kanyakubja, Shashanka received this news. He then proceeded to help Devagupta. But before he could do so, Malavaraja Devagupta was defeated and killed by Rajyavardhana.

Meanwhile, Rajyavardhana was as elated with the victory as Devagupta was, and so he sent some of his small army to Thaneswar with the captured Malava soldiers without thinking of the danger ahead. He marched with the rest of the army to Kanyakubja. But on the way, he met Shashanka and fought with him. He was killed in battle with Shashanka. Rajyavardhana and Shang were not faithful to Shashanka's role in Rajyavardhana's death. Shashanka had betrayed Rajyavardhana, and the inscription of Harshavardhana does not support the allegation of Shang that he killed him. So it is said that Rajyavardhana died alone in a head-on battle with the mighty Shasanka with a handful of soldiers on the battlefield. Then, upon hearing the news of Dada Rajyavardhana's death, Harshavardhana vowed that he would sacrifice his life if he did not jump into the flames of Shanka within a certain day.

Harsha started his war against Shashanka. On the way, he heard that his sister Rajyashri had escaped from the prison and gone to Vindhya mountain. Harsha Vardhan, who had ordered the commander Bhondi to proceed, went to Vindhya mountain in search of his sister. Meanwhile, Rajyashri was preparing to jump into the burning fire. Harshvardhan, who had rescued his sister Rajyashri, joined his army in Gangatir. Banabhatta's "Harsha-charitra" ends here. Banabhatta does not mention any mention of Harsha Vardhan's battle with Shashanka.

The 619 CE king Chaturdadhi-Salilbeecimekhala Dwipagiripattanavati of the Saillodbhava dynasty of the Kongod kingdom in the Ganjam district of Orissa refers to himself as the Mahasamanta of Maharajadhiraja Srishashanka, the lord of Vasundhara.
