Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (December 17) inaugurated the re-opening of the Chilahati-Haldibari railway line between Nilphamari in Bangladesh and Haldibari in India after 55 years The first train with 32 wagons left Chilahati station for Haldibari station in India.

The entire district, including Chilahati, is rejoicing the return of the train through the Chilahati-Haldibari railway line after 55 long years The train from neighbouring India was greeted by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Railway Minister Nurul Islam by erecting arches, gates and banners at different places.

Incidentally, the railway line continued to operate even after the partition of Pakistan and India on 15 August 1947 At that time, passenger and freight trains were running on this route between the two countries After the 1965 Indo-Pak war, the railway line between the two countries was closed The abandoned railway line was taken up by the governments of Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi.

The present government undertook a project to open the railway line at a cost of 801 69 billion rupees.

The project includes construction of 6,724 km broad gauge railway line from Chilahati Railway Station to the border and other infrastructure including construction of a 2 36 km loop line The project was formally inaugurated by the Railway Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan on 21 September last year at Chilahati Railway Station premises.
