Former French President Sarkozy sentenced to three years in prison for corruption.
On Monday, 1 March, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to three years in prison.
According to the French court, he attempted to bribe a magistrate with high office favours rather than extract information about the criminal case filed against him, and was charged and convicted on Monday and sentenced to three years in prison.
It should be noted that he did not have to go to jail, however, as the French court later announced that his two-year sentence had been overturned and he would serve one year under house arrest with electronic tags.
According to the BBC, "the 66-year-old is the first former French president to be taken into legal custody ".
It is worth noting that the former president, along with his former lawyer and the said magistrate, were accused in the case and were also convicted and received the same sentence.
