It is known that the founder of the temple of Baba Taraknath at Tarakeswar was a devotee of Shiva named Vishnudas from Uttar Pradesh. He came from Uttar Pradesh and settled in the Hooghly district. The temple was renovated by the Malla kings in 1729. < br > < / div >
It is said that long ago, Vishnudas's brother saw cows coming to a local forest on a black rock to offer milk regularly. After seeing this strange sight, he told his grandfather Vishnudas the whole matter.
Vishnudas then received the dream and started worshipping the rock as a symbol of Shiva. A Shiva temple was built. The temple is named after the Tarakeshwara form of Shiva. The Shiva temple has been repaired and rebuilt several times. The temple was renovated by the Malla kings in 1729.
Baba Taraknath's temple is an Atchala temple. The temple as we see it today is built by the Malla kings. On the opposite side of the temple is the Nat Mandir, where thousands of people sit and speak their mind to Baba.
Thousands of people come to offer water to Baba in the month of Shravan. Devotees walk miles on foot with their shoulders bent. Most people leave with tears from Nimai Tirth Ghat in Baidyavati, Hooghly to offer water to Baba Taraknath. Also, thousands of people visit Tarakeshwar temple throughout the year.
There is a pond on the left side of the main temple of Baba. Everyone knows the name of the milkmaid. There are also folk tales and beliefs about the milkmaid. Even today, thousands of women rush to Tarakeswar temple to wish for a child or for the well-being of the child. People tie rags on different sides of the temple for the purpose of offering prayers. There is also a Kali temple adjacent to the temple.
