The Andhra Pradesh government will begin the process of reclaiming 100,000 acres of land that was occupied by Hindu temples.
There have been allegations of Hindu temples losing land and property in several southern states, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where temple authorities have drawn the attention of the central government to the forcible acquisition of temple lands by people of other religions.
Addressing a press conference in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, Commissioner of Land Rehabilitation Arjun Rao said that about one lakh lands of various temples that are under illegal occupation will be restored in the state.
There are four lakh government lands which will be used for rehabilitation Many of the temple lands have been cultivated or settled by farmers.
The Andhra Pradesh Land and Land Revenue officials said that the demarcation would begin on 21 December, after a meeting with the Commissioner regarding the handing over of their lands to the two temples in Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts, including the Seemachalam temple, which has a population of 10,000 people on 450 acres of land, and farmers who have started cultivating 1,500 acres of land.
The court also directed the temple authorities to provide alternative land to the farmers and also to expedite the process of giving 1,000 acres of land to the farmers.
