The government's order to schools in Indonesia, an Islamic country, not to make religious dress compulsory came after a video went viral showing a Christian girl being forced to wear a headscarf The video of the 16-year-old girl being asked to wear a Muslim headscarf to school went viral.
The government issued the order after much uproar from the Indonesian Christian community, which strictly ordered all schools to comply within 30 days.
In his statement, Indonesian Education Minister Nadiem Makarim said that schools can never decide who will wear what, as it depends on personal likes and dislikes.
The government order, issued on Wednesday, also warns schools that force girls to wear hijab or dress in defiance of government orders to speed up the next round of government grants.
