Rising Bengal Dhaka Bureau: Awami League Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister of Bangladesh Dr. Hasan Mahmud has asked'Can those who commit rape in the midst of the epidemic not be arrested?'in response to the demand of the BNP Secretary General not to arrest Hefazat leaders amid the Corona epidemic.
The minister came up with the question while speaking as the chief guest at a programme held at the National Press Club in the capital on Monday (April 26) to distribute Corona Protection Kits among the members of Dhaka Union of Journalists and representatives of different media organizations on behalf of the Relief and Social Welfare Subcommittee of Bangladesh Awami League.
Dr Hasan Mahmud said,'In this Corona pandemic, a radical terrorist group tried to create anarchy in the country. And sadly, the BNP secretary general is making statements on their behalf.'' Can those who burn down houses, properties, vehicles of innocent people, burn land documents of common people by setting fire to land offices, attack fire-railway-police stations, destroy heritage-ancestry, attack places of worship of other religions, not be arrested? Should the country's criminal law be made ineffective against them?'asked Awami League joint general secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud.
Mentioning that Bangladesh Awami League is the only party that has been with the people throughout the Corona pandemic, and not any other political party, the minister said that it is not only the Awami League workers who are cutting the paddy of the farmers and delivering it to their homes.
The minister added, "The job loss of journalists in media houses on the pretext of business slowdown during the Corona period is very sad, undesirable and unacceptable to me.
Presided over by Dhaka Union of Journalists president Kuddus Afrad and moderated by its general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Tapur, the function was addressed, among others, by Awami League Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, former president of BFUJ Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, and editor of the daily Bhorer Kagoj Shyamal Dutta as special guests. Representatives of around 70 organisations, including newspapers, TV, radio, and online media, received corona protective equipment from the guests.
