Rising Bengal Dhaka Bureau: Today (28 April) is the 68th birthday of the heroic freedom fighter Shaheed Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal, the second son of the architect of Bangladesh's independence Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and an officer of the Bangladesh Army.
Sheikh Jamal was born on 28 April 1954 in Tungipara village of Gopalganj district He passed his secondary education from Dhaka Residential Model College and higher secondary from Dhaka College He was a lover of culture and a sportsperson.
Sheikh Jamal was also under house arrest along with other family members during the Great War of Liberation in 1971 He escaped from there and led the front line in the Great War of Liberation Sheikh Jamal reached Agartala, India after a very risky journey from Dhanmondi and joined the Mujib Bahini (Bangladesh Liberation Forces, BLF) there and participated in the front line in Sector 9 of the War of Liberation.
Sheikh Jamal was a patriotic and shrewd army officer He was a commissioned officer in the first batch of the Long Course of the Bangladesh Army In 1974, Sheikh Jamal attended a training camp as a cadet at the Military Academy of Yugoslavia After training at Sandhurst Academy in Britain, he returned home and joined the 2nd East Bengal Regiment at Dhaka Cantonment as a second lieutenant.
During his short stint in the 2nd East Bengal, he left an impression of professionalism and sincerity among the officers and soldiers Within a few weeks, Sheikh Jamal became one of the officers and soldiers He impressed the soldiers by participating in training grounds, tactical classes, obstacle crossing, and training the members of the battalion boxing team.
He returned home from the cantonment that night to Dhanmondi 32 On 15 August 1975, Sheikh Jamal was killed along with other family members by a stray bullet fired by the assassin.
