ঘটনাটি ঘটেছে অসমের শিলচর জেলায়। এই এলাকাতেই এনকাউন্টারে মারা গেছে দুই ডাকাত কামরুল ইসলাম ও আমরুল ইসলাম। এই দুজনেই ডাকাতরূপে বেশ ভালো রকমের কুখ্যাতি অর্জন করেছিল এলাকায়। মারধোর ও লুটপাট, এই ধরণের একাধিক অভিযোগ ছিল আমরুল ও কামরুলের বিরুদ্ধে। বহুদিন তল্লাশি চালানোর পরে অবশেষে ধরা পড়ে দুজনে।
দীর্ঘদিন তল্লাশি চালানো পরে শিলচর পুলিশ অবশেষে জোড়হাট থেকে দুইজনকে গ্রেফতার করে। পুলিশ সূত্রে জানা গেছে, রবিবারে সকালে এই দুইজনকে কাটিগাড়া নিয়ে যাওয়া হচ্ছিল তদন্ত চালানোর জন্য। এই এলাকাতেই যখন তদন্ত চলছিল, তখনই ডাকাত আমরুল ও কামরুল পালানোর চেষ্টা করে। পুলিশ মাইকে ঘোষণার করলেও তাঁরা না থেমে দৌড়াতে থাকে। এই অবস্থায় পুলিশ গুলি চালালে মারা যায় দুই ডাকাত।
