১৫২৬ খ্রিস্টাব্দে প্রথম পানিপথের যুদ্ধ দিয়ে হিন্দুস্থানে যে মোগল সাম্রাজ্যের ভিত শুরু করেন জহিরউদ্দিন মহম্মদ বাবর, ১৫২৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দে খানুয়ার যুদ্ধে মজবুত হলো তার ভিত। খানুয়ার যুদ্ধে বাবরের প্রতিপক্ষ ছিলেন মেবারের রাণা সংগ্রাম সিংহ (রাণা সঙ্গ)।

উত্তর ভারত থেকে বাবরকে তাড়াতে কয়েকজন মুসলিম শাসকও রাজপুত দলে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন। যুদ্ধ শুরুর আগে বাবর তাঁর সেনাদের উদ্দেশ্যে বলেছিলেন, এ যুদ্ধ ধর্মযুদ্ধ।

বাবর তাঁর আত্মজীবনী "বাবরনামা"-য় জানাচ্ছেন, ---

"The pagan right wing made repeated and desperate attack on the left wing of the army of Islam, falling furiously on the holy warrior's possessors of salvation, but each time was made to turn back or smitten with the arrows of victory, was 'made to descend into hell, the house of perdition: they shall be thrown to burn therein, and an unhappy dwelling shall it be.' অর্থাৎ, পৌত্তলিক বাহিনী ডাইনে-বাঁয়ে প্রচণ্ড বেগে একাধিকবার ইসলাম ধর্মযোদ্ধাদের আক্রমণ করে। প্রতিবারেই প্রত‍্যাঘাতে পিছু হটে। ওদের ঠাঁই হবে নরকে। নরকের ভয়ংকর আগুনে ছুঁড়ে ফেলা হবে ওদের। এরপর সেনাপতি মুমিন আটকা ও রুস্তম তুর্কোমান পেছন থেকে কাফেরদের আক্রমণ করে।

এরপরের ঘটনাও বাবর লিখেছেন, ---

অর্থাৎ, যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে নিহত হলো অসংখ্য শত্রু। বাকিরা মরুভূমিতে পালিয়ে গেল এবং শীঘ্রই তারা হয়ে গেল কাক-চিলের খাদ‍্য। মৃতদেহ জড়ো করে তৈরি করা হলো ঢিপি আর তার ওপরে কাটা মুণ্ডু দিয়ে স্তম্ভ।
হিন্দুস্থানের কাফেরদের বিরুদ্ধে খানুয়ার যুদ্ধ শেষে বিজয়ী বাবর হলেন ধর্মযোদ্ধা "গাজী।" তারপর আল্লাহর উদ্দেশ্যে লিখলেন চতুষ্পদী কবিতা, ---

"For Islam's sake, I wandered in the wilds, prepared for war with pagans and Hindus, Resolved myself to meet the martyr's death. Thanks be to God ! a Ghazi I became."----Babar Nama, Page-575: A.S. Beveridge.

অর্থাৎ, ইসলামের জয়ের তরে
ঘুরেছি দেশ-দেশান্তরে।
পৌত্তলিক হিন্দুদের সনে
যুদ্ধের তরে। ।
শহীদের মরণ হবে মোর,
পরাণ ত‍্যাজি।
এ ছিল মোর শপথ,
কৃতজ্ঞ আমি খোদার কাছে
হয়েছি আজি গাজী। ।

খানুয়ার যুদ্ধে রাণা সংগ্রাম সিংহের পরাজয়ের পরেও রাজপুতরা মেদিনী রাওয়ের নেতৃত্বে ফের বাবরের বিরুদ্ধে জোট বাঁধেন। বাবর অবরোধ করলেন তাঁদের চান্দেরী দুর্গ। সে বৃত্তান্ত আগামী পর্বে।
