অর্থাৎ, ১৩৯৮ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সিন্ধু নদ পেরিয়ে হিন্দুস্থান আক্রমণ করেন তৈমুর। যারা পালাতে পারে নি, তাদের সবাইকে হত্যা বা বন্দি করেন। দিল্লির সুলতান মামুদ তুঘলককে পরাজিত করে দিল্লির দখল নেন। ঠাণ্ডা মাথায় নির্বিচারে ১ লক্ষ বন্দিকে হত্যা করেন। দিল্লি শহর লুঠ করে লক্ষ নারী ও ক্রীতদাস নিয়ে ফিরে যান সমরখন্দে। হিন্দুস্থানের জন্য রেখে যান অরাজকতা, দুর্ভিক্ষ আর মহামারী।
তৈমুরকে যথাসাধ্য বাধা দিয়েছিলেন দিল্লির সুলতান মামুদ শা তুঘলক, কিন্তু সে বাধা টেকেনি। তৈমুরের আদেশে দুর্ধর্ষ তুর্কি সেনাবাহিনী ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লো নির্বিচারে হিন্দু গণহত্যায়। হিন্দুরা পরিবারের সম্মান রাখতে নিজেরাই নিজেদের ঘরে আগুন দিল। আর তাতে জীবন্ত পুড়ে মরলো তাদের স্ত্রী-পুত্র-কন্যারা।
এরপর তারা বাধা দিল তৈমুরের তুর্কি বাহিনীকে। কিন্তু অসম লড়াইয়ে প্রাণ গেল বহু হিন্দুর। দিল্লির রাজপথ রাঙা হয়ে উঠলো রক্তে। রাস্তার ধারে শুধুই মৃতদেহের স্তূপ। ৩ দিন ধরে দিল্লিতে চললো দেড় লক্ষ তুর্কি সৈন্যের তৈমুরী তাণ্ডব। চললো খুন, লুঠপাট, বাড়িতে আগুন লাগানো। প্রত্যেক তুর্কি সৈন্য ৫০ থেকে ১০০ জনকে ধরে নিয়ে এলো। তবে তৈমুরের নির্দেশে নিহত হয় নি কোনো মুসলমান, তাদের ঘরবাড়িও লুঠ হয় নি। সৈয়দ, উলেমা ও অন্যান্য মুসলিমদের ঘরবাড়ি বাদে গোটা শহরটাই হয়ে গেল ধ্বংসস্তূপ। তৈমুরের আত্মজীবনীতেই উপরের কথাগুলি বলছেন তিনি নিজেই।
তাঁর কথায়, ---
"... The Hindus set fire to their houses with their own hands, burned their wives and children in them, and rushed into the fight and were killed on that day, Thursday and all the night of Friday, nearly 15000 Turks were engaged in slaying, plundering and destroying ---and the spoil was so great that each man secured from fifty to a hundred prisoners---Excepying the quarters of the Saiyads, the Ulema and the other Mussalmans, the whole city was sacked."----Tamur----Mulfuzat-I-Timuri, Page-445-446, The Calcutta Quram Petition, New Delhi, Page-63-64, The Koran And The Kafir, U.S.A., Page-32: A. তৈমুর তাঁর আত্মজীবনীতে জানিয়েছেন, --
"I reflected that I had come to Hindustan for war against infidels----I had put to death some lakhs of infidels----and I felt that I ought not to indulge in ease but rather to exert myself in warring against the infidels of Hindustan."---Timur----Mulfuzat-I-Timuri, Page-448, The Calcutta Quram Petition, Page-64.
অর্থাৎ, ১৫ দিন দিল্লিতে ছিলাম। সুখে-আনন্দেই দিন কাটছিল। দরবার বসিয়েছি, বড়ো বড়ো ভোজের আয়োজন করেছি। তারপরেই মনে পড়লো, কাফেরদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতেই তো হিন্দুস্থানে এসেছি। হত্যা করেছি লক্ষ লক্ষ কাফেরকে, তাদের টাটকা রক্তে পবিত্র তরবারি। ...এখন তাই আরাম করার সময় নয়, বরং কাফেরদের বিরুদ্ধে লাগাতার যুদ্ধ চালিয়ে যাওয়াই উচিত। তাই ফের অভিযান শুরু করলেন তৈমুর। এবার হরিদ্বার। হরিদ্বারে তখন পুণ্যস্নান চলছে। লক্ষ লক্ষ পুণ্যার্থী হাজির হয়েছেন গঙ্গা তীরে। বেশির ভাগই বৃদ্ধ-বৃদ্ধা। নিরস্ত্র তীর্থযাত্রীদের ওপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লো তৈমুরের তুর্কি বাহিনী।
অনেকেই আশ্রয় নিলো পাহাড়ে। সেখানেও আক্রমণ চালালো তৈমুর বাহিনী। পাহাড় থেকে রক্তের ধারা নেমে এলো সমতলভূমিতে। লাল হয়ে উঠলো গঙ্গার জল।
তৈমুর লিখছেন, ---
"During a bathing festival on the bank of the Ganges, they slaughtered many of the infidels, and pursued those who fled to the mountains. So many of them were killed and their blood ran down the mountains and plain, and thus (nearly) all were sent to hell."----Timur----Malfuzat-I-Taimuri, Page-459, The Calcutta Quram Petition, Page-65.
দিল্লির পর মীরাট, হরিদ্বার ও জম্মুতে নৃশংস অভিযান চালিয়েছেন তৈমুর। আর তৈমুরের এই অভিযানের ফল হয়েছে, ---
"তৈমুরলঙের ভারতবর্ষ আক্রমণের ফলে হিন্দু ও মুসলমানের মধ্যে সামাজিক দূরত্ব আরও বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছিল। ...দুই জাতির মধ্যে বিদ্বেষ স্থায়ীরূপ লাভ করেছিল। তৈমুরের আক্রমণের ফলে মুসলমানদের ভয়ে হিন্দুরা তাদের মেয়েদের অল্প বয়সে বিবাহ দিতে শুরু করেছিল।"
"Hindustan was shaken up in two ways by the coming of Islam, and strange to say, these ways were country to each other. On the one side it became conservative, it hardened and retired into a shell in an attempt at protecting itself against the attack on it. অর্থাৎ, ইসলামের আগমনে দু'দিক থেকে পরিবর্তন আসে হিন্দু ধর্মে। একদিকে আত্মরক্ষার্থে হিন্দু ধর্ম আশ্রয় নেয় শক্ত খোলের ভেতরে, হয়ে ওঠে রক্ষণশীল। নমনীয় জাতিভেদ প্রথা কঠোর হয়ে ওঠে। ....অন্যদিকে, জাতিভেদ প্রথা, পুজো-পাঠ ও ধর্মীয় আচার-অনুষ্ঠানের বাড়াবাড়ির বিরুদ্ধে ভেতরে ভেতরে সরব হয় প্রতিবাদী কণ্ঠ।
