১০৭০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে ভারতের কনৌজ লুঠ করে অগণিত ধনসম্পদ ও যুদ্ধবন্দি ক্রীতদাস নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন স্বদেশ গজনীতে। সে সময় প্রচুর সংখ্যক ক্রীতদাস আমদানির কারণে বাজারে মন্দা দেখা দেয়। ফলে ভারত থেকে নিয়ে যাওয়া যুদ্ধবন্দি ক্রীতদাসদের নামমাত্র মূল্যে বিক্রি করতে হয়েছিল। ঐতিহাসিক টাইটাসের বিবরণ অনুযায়ী ২ থেকে ১০ দিনার মূল্যে ( ১ দিনার মানে ৫০ থেকে ৬০ পয়সা) বিক্রি করতে হয়েছে একজন ক্রীতদাসকে। এ থেকে যুদ্ধবন্দিদের সংখ্যাটা সম্পর্কে ধারণা করা যায়। ভারত থেকে শেকলে বেঁধে হাঁটিয়ে হাঁটিয়ে হিন্দুকুশ পর্বত পেরিয়ে এইসব যুদ্ধবন্দিদের ক্রীতদাস হিসেবে নিয়ে যাওয়া হতো বাইরের দেশে। এভাবেই প্রথম ভারত আক্রমণেই এ দেশের ৫০ লক্ষ হিন্দুকে বন্দি করে সুলতান মামুদ তাঁর রাজ্য গজনীতে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন।
"Not only was slaughter of infidels and the destruction of their temples resorted to in earlier period of Islamic contact with India, but as we have seen, many of the vanquished were led into slavery. The dividing up of booty was one of the special attraction, to the leaders as well as to the common soldiers in these expeditions. Mahamud seems to have made the slaughter of infidels, the destruction of their temples and capturing of slaves and the plundering of the wealth of the people, particularly of the priests, the main object of his raids. ভারত থেকে নিয়ে যাওয়া ৫০ হাজার ক্রীতদাস সরবরাহের কারণে বাজারে মন্দা দেখা দেয়। ক্রীতদাস কিনতে দূর দেশ থেকে বণিকের দল আসতো গজনীতে। .....সুন্দর-অসুন্দর, ধনী-গরীব সবার পরিণতি ছিল এক এবং তা হলো দাসত্ব।

"The number of prisoners may be conceived from the fact that each was sold for from two to ten dirhams. আবার এ বিষয়ে দৌলত রায় তাঁর "সাহিব কমল" গ্রন্থে জানাচ্ছেন, লক্ষ লক্ষ হিন্দুকে হত্যা করে মামুদ। আরও কয়েক লক্ষকে ক্রীতদাস-ক্রীতদাসী করে মাথা পিছু দুই দিনার মূল্যে গজনীর বাজারে বিক্রি করে।

এত লুটপাট করে সাজিয়ে তোলা নিজের রাজধানী গজনী কিন্তু ছারখার হয়ে যায় আগুনে পুড়ে। আর এ আগুন লাগানো হয়েছিল। লাগিয়েছিলেন ঘোর রাজ্যের শাসক আলাউদ্দিন হাসান। খ্রিস্টিয় দ্বাদশ শতাব্দীর মধ্যভাগে আফগানিস্তানের গজনী ও হিরাটের মাঝে ঘোর রাজ্য ছিল। এই ঘোর রাজ্যটি একসময় গজনীর সুলতান মামুদের অধীনেই ছিল। কিন্তু তৎকালীন গজনীর সুলতান বেরহাম ঘোর শাসক আলাউদ্দিন হাসানের ভাইকে নিষ্ঠুরভাবে হত্যা করেন।
এই ঘটনায় ঘোরিরা ১১৫২ খ্রিস্টাব্দ নাগাদ গজনী আক্রমণ করে। পরাজিত হয় গজনী। সাতদিন ধরে গজনীতে গণহত্যা চলে। আলাউদ্দিন হাসান নির্মমভাবে সুলতান বেরহামের কয়েকজন অনুগতকে হত্যা করেন এবং তাদের রক্ত মাটির সঙ্গে মিশিয়ে বাড়ির দেওয়ালের গাঁথুনি করেন। গজনীর সুলতান পালিয়ে এসে আশ্রয় নেন ভারতের লাহোরে। লাহোর তখন গজনীর অধীনেই ছিল।
আর অন্তত ১৭ বার ভারত আক্রমণ করে যে নির্মম অত্যাচার এ দেশে চালিয়েছিলেন সুলতান মামুদ, তাঁর মৃত্যুর শতবর্ষ পরে তার পুনরাবৃত্তি ঘটলো নিজের গজনীতেই। ভারতের অপরিমিত ধনসম্পদ লুঠ করে সুলতান মামুদ যে গজনীকে সাজিয়েছিলেন, তা আগুনে জ্বালিয়ে পুড়িয়ে ধ্বংসস্তূপে পরিণত করে দিলেন ঘোর শাসক আলাউদ্দিন হাসান।
