Letter writing is almost extinct. So postcards are of little importance to this generation. Letters are still in circulation in the "Daily" section of All India Radio, Kolkata. Letters are in circulation in other sections of All India Radio, but there is an alternative to e-mail. Bengali letter literature was once a topic of discussion. Now, in the age of mail, voice-up, Twitter, postcards are outdated but still nostalgic. Postcards were born in British India. The first postcards were introduced in the country in 1879. They were larger than today. They were 43/4 "X 3" in size. The price was one paisa.

The right side of the postcard had a picture of Queen Victoria, the then Empress of India, in brown colour. In the centre was a seal with the emblem of the English East India Company. Below this shield was the words "East India" in English and "Post Card" on one side. Below this was the words "The Address Only to be written on this side" (The address only to be written on this side). The colour of the postcard was brown. Postcards could not be written on both sides. It was a movement. It was called "Samvad Madhyam," the fourth pillar of democracy. The editor of the popular English daily Amritbazar Patrika was Mahatma Sisir Kumar Ghosh.

Later in 1880, India introduced the postcard with the "Reply Card." This remained the same. Only the words "The Annexed Card is intended for answer" were written on the left side. Later, a further radical change took place in 1882. The postcard had been written "East India Postcard," this time with the inscription "India Postcard." The East India Company's emblem was removed to the left and the inscription "India Postcard" was added to the right.
The first foreign postcard was introduced in India in 1879. It was priced at 6 paise. Later in 1892, the price was reduced to 1 anna. This price reduction was mainly to popularise foreign postcards. Another width change in postcards was made in 1902. The King of England at the time was Edward VII. Postcards and postage stamps during his reign used crowns. The current size of postcards is five inches long and three and a half inches wide. Postcards can now be written on both sides.
