ঐতিহাসিক উইল ডুরান্টের কথায়, ফি বছর শীতকালে গজনীর সুলতান মামুদ হানা দিতেন হিন্দুস্থানে। তারপর দু'হাতে ধনসম্পদ লুঠ করে স্বদেশে ফিরতেন বসন্তকালে। হিন্দুস্থানের সেইসব লুঠের মালপত্র গর্বের সঙ্গে দেখাতেন বিভিন্ন বিদেশি দূতদের। এইসব লুঠের মাল হিসেবে ছিল পরিশ্রুত বরফ-ঠাণ্ডি মদ অথবা আগুনের ফুলকির মতো জ্বলজ্বলে মুক্তো, পদ্মরাগ মণি, চির সবুজ লতার মতো পান্না ও আকারে-ওজনে পাকা ডালিমের মতো বড়ো হিরের টুকরো।
লুটপাট ও গণহত্যার মধ্যে দিয়েই ভর্তি হতো সুলতান মামুদের রাজকোষ। মনের আনন্দের জন্য লুটপাট ও গণহত্যায় অবাধ স্বাধীনতা দেওয়া হতো সৈন্যদের। তারপর আগের চেয়ে ধনী হয়ে স্বদেশযাত্রা হতো তাঁর।
উইল ডুরান্টের নিজের ভাষায়, ---
"Each winter Mahmud descended into India, filled his treasure chest with spoils and amused his men with full freedom to pillage and kill; each spring he retured to his capital richer then before. পূর্ব আফগানিস্তানর একটি ছোট্ট রাজ্য ছিল গজনী। সুলতান ছিলেন সবুক্তগীন। সবুক্তগীনের মৃত্যুর পর গজনীর সিংহাসনে বসেন তাঁর জ্যেষ্ঠ পুত্র আমীর ইসমাইল। কিন্তু তাঁর কনিষ্ঠ ভাই আমুর মামুদ তাঁকে হত্যা করে গজনীর সুলতান পদে বসলেন ৯৯৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দে। সুলতান মামুদ অন্তত ১৭ বার হিন্দুস্থান আক্রমণ করেছিলেন। আর সেইসব আক্রমণের বিবরণ লিখেছেন তাঁর দরবারের ঐতিহাসিক আল্-উৎবি।
আল্-উৎবি'র বিবরণ থেকে তথ্য নিয়ে ড: বি. আর. আম্বেদকর জানাচ্ছেন, ---
"He demolished idol temples and established Islam. He captured...cities, killed the polluted wretches, destroying the idolaters, and gratifying Muslims. He then returned home and promulgated accounts of the victories obtained for Islam...and vowed that every year he would undertake a holy war against Hind."----Writings and Speeches, Vol.8, Page-56:
