The river Saraswati, though lost, still survives in the history of Bengali literature This Saraswati is not the Saraswati of the Indus region of the Rigveda, but the Saraswati of Bengal It existed as a tributary of the Bhagirathi until the 16th century CE in the Saptagram region of Hooghly.

Here is the confluence of the Ganges and its two main tributaries - the Yamuna and the Saraswati, "Muktabeni " Saraswati originated near Saptagram. The Saptagram port was developed soon after the decline of Tamralipta port, then the Kolkata port after Saptagram When the navigability of Saptagram port declined, the Portuguese left the area and took firmans from Mughal Emperor Akbar and built "Ugolim" or Hooghly on the western bank of the Bhagirathi between 1578 and 1580 AD.

Eventually, the Portuguese, abandoning trade, began to plunder the area and the Hooghly river became known as "Rogues River" meaning robber's river In 1632, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan sent troops to oust the Portuguese from here.

The Saraswati Bachao Andolan was started for the once dying Saraswati Under pressure, the State Irrigation Department took up a project to renovate the Saraswati at a cost of ₹32 crore in the area from Naseebpur in Hooghly to Sankrail in Howrah, and work began on the Sankrail side in 2008.
