যতদিন পযর্ন্ত অক্ষত থাকবে সোমনাথ মন্দির, ততদিন তিনি মূর্তি ভাঙা বন্ধ করবেন না---সুলতান মামুদ এই প্রতিজ্ঞা পালনে এবার এলেন সোমনাথে। সোমনাথ মন্দিরে ছিল এক হাজার পূজারী, শত শত নর্তকী ও গায়িকার দল। সেই সঙ্গে মামুদের জেহাদি বাহিনীর হুংকারে ভীত সন্ত্রস্ত অসহায় প্রায় পঞ্চাশ হাজার নরনারী আশ্রয় নিলেন সোমনাথ মন্দিরে।

মন্দিরের গর্ভগৃহের মাঝে বহু মূল্যবান মণি-মাণিক‍্য খচিত কষ্টিপাথরের বিশাল শিবলিঙ্গ। আর তার চারদিকে নক্ষত্রের মতো নানান্ রত্নখচিত ঝুলন্ত দীপাধার, যেগুলি বিগ্রহকে আলোকিত করে রাখতো সব সময়। মন্দিরে ছিল অনেকগুলি সোণার মূর্তি, যার মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বড়ো মূর্তিটি ছিল "মানত" ( Manat)। ইসলাম ধ‍র্ম প্রবর্তনের আগে মক্কাবাসীরা যে সব দেবতার উপাসনা করতো, তাঁদের মধ্যে অন্যতম ছিলেন এই "মানত।"

কাবা থেকে এই মূর্তি এনে তা সোমনাথ মন্দিরে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়েছিল বলে জানাচ্ছেন ঐতিহাসিক খাজা নিজামুদ্দিন আহমেদ, ---

"There were many golden idols in the temple in the city, and the largest of these idols was called Manat----this idol was taken out of the house of Kabba and was brought here."---The Tabaqat-I-Akbari, Vol.8, Page-15: Khwajah Nizamuddin Ahmed.

পৈশাচিক উল্লাসে মন্দিরের ওপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লো মামুদ বাহিনী। হত্যা করা হলো মন্দিরে আশ্রয় নেওয়া পঞ্চাশ হাজার হিন্দু নরনারী, বয়ে গেল রক্তের নদী, ভেঙে গুঁড়িয়ে দেওয়া হলো মন্দির, লুঠ করা হলো মন্দিরের অতুল ঐশ্বর্য।

ঐতিহাসিক খাজা নিজামুদ্দিনের কথায়, ---

".....the fort was taken, and the methods of plunder and destruction were carried into effect, and vast multiudes were killed and taken prisoner. The temple were pulled down, and destroyed from their very foundations. The idol of Somnath was broken to pieces, and one piece was sent to Ghazni, and was placed at the gate of the Jama Masjid; and for years it remained there."----The Tabaqat-I-Akbari, Vol.8, Page-15: Khwajah Nizamuddhin Ahmed.

অর্থাৎ, .....দখল হলো দুর্গ। শুরু হলো পরিকল্পনা মাফিক ধ্বংস ও লুটপাট। অসংখ্য মানুষ নিহত ও বন্দি। গোটা সোমনাথ মন্দির ধ্বংস। বিগ্রহটিকে ভেঙে টুকরো টুকরো করে তার একটি টুকরো গজনীতে এনে বসানো হয় জামা মসজিদের প্রবেশপথে, যাতে মানুষজন তা মাড়িয়ে আসা-যাওয়া করে।

অন্যদিকে, এ বিষয়ে ঐতিহাসিক মীনহাজ-উস্-সিরাজের বক্তব্য উদ্ধৃত করে ঐতিহাসিক মুরি টাইটাস জানাচ্ছেন, ---

"Minhaj-us-Siraj further tells how Mahmud became widely known for having destroyed as many as a thousand temples, and of this great feat in destroying the temple of Somnath and carring off its idol, which he asserts was broken into four parts. One part he deposited in the Jama Masjid of Ghazni, one he placed at the entrance of the royal palace, the third he sent to Macca, and the forth to Madina."

----অর্থাৎ, এক হাজার মন্দির ভেঙে নামী হয়েছিলেন মামুদ। তবে তাঁর সবচেয়ে বড়ো কাজ সোমনাথ মন্দির ধ্বংস। সোমনাথ বিগ্রহ নিয়ে যান গজনীতে। বিগ্রহ ভেঙে করা হয় চারটি টুকরো। এক টুকরো বসানো হয় গজনীর জামা মসজিদে, এক টুকরো রাজপ্রাসাদের সদর দরজায় এবং বাকি দু'টুকরো মক্কা ও মদিনায় পাঠানো হয়।

ঐতিহাসিক লেন পুল (Lane Poole)-এর বক্তব্য উদ্ধৃত করে ড: বি. আর. আম্বেদকর লিখছেন, ---

"It is said by Lane Poole that Mahmud of Ghazni ' who had vowed that every year should see him wage a holy war against the infidels of Hindusthan' could not rest from his idol-breaking campaign so long as the temple of Somnath remained inviolate.....a thousand brahmains served the temple and guarded its treasures, and hundreds of dancers and singers played before its gates. Within stood the famous linga, a rude piller stone adorned with gems and lighted by jewelled candelebra which were reflected in rich hangings, embroidered with precious stones like stars, that decked the shrine.....The foreigners nothing daunted, scaled the walls; the God remained dumb to the urgent appeals of his servants, fifty thousand Hindus suffered to their faith and the sacred shrine was sacked to the joy of the true believers. The great stone was cast down and its fragments were carried off to grace the conqueror's place. The temple gates were set up at Ghazni and a million pounds worth of treasure rewarded the iconoclast."---Writings and Speeches, Vo.8, Page-58: Dr.B.R.Ambedkar.

সুলতান মামুদের বিজয়ের খবর পেয়ে বাগদাদের খলিফা এক বিরাট উৎসবের আয়োজন করেছিলেন। সেখানে ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করা হয় মামুদের। যাঁদের বীরত্বের জন্য আরবিয়া, সিরিয়া, ইরান ও ইরাক পরাজিত হয়েছিল, সেইসব পয়গম্বর ঘনিষ্ঠ সহচর বীর মুসলিম যোদ্ধাদের সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হয় তাঁর।

এ দেশে আরব মুসলিমদের অবাধ যাতায়াত বহু আগে থেকেই ছিল। তারা এ দেশের মাটিতে ধর্ম প্রচার, ধর্মান্তরকরণ, মসজিদ নির্মাণ করেছে। কিন্তু হিন্দু-মুসলমানে সংঘাত হয়নি। কিন্তু অবস্থাটা পাল্টে গেল খ্রিস্টিয় একাদশ শতাব্দীতে, যখন ইসলাম এলো খোলা তরবারি হাতে। আর এ জন্য দায়ী সুলতান মামুদ। মামুদের সৈন্যরা ভারতের সম্পদ লুঠের ভাগ পেয়েছে, কিন্তু সাধারণ মুসলমানরা তা পায়নি। নির্বিচারে লুটপাট, গণহত্যা, ক্রীতদাসকরণ থেকে শুরু করে কাফেরদের ধর্ম নির্মূল করার লক্ষ্যেই তাঁর জেহাদি কার্যকলাপের কারণেই মামুদের সম্পর্কে এ দেশের হিন্দুদের মধ্যে বিরূপ প্রতিক্রিয়ার সৃষ্টি হয়।

তাই স্বভাবতই হিন্দুরা মামুদের মতো মূর্তিমান বিভীষিকার নামে তাদের শিশুদের ভয় দেখিয়ে শান্ত করতো। এভাবেই মামুদের মতো আক্রমণকারীদের কারণেই হিন্দু-মুসলমান সম্পর্কের অবনতির শুরু এবং সাতচল্লিশের দেশভাগে তার চূড়ান্ত পরিণতি।
