মথুরা আক্রমণে সুলতান মামুদ
ভগবান কৃষ্ণ-বাসুদেবের জন্মস্থান হিসেবে পরিচিত হিন্দুদের পবিত্র তীর্থক্ষেত্র প্রাসাদ নগরী মথুরা। সারা বছর বহু হিন্দু সাধু-সন্ন্যাসীদের বাস এখানে। এছাড়া সারা বছর ধরে তীর্থযাত্রীদের আসা-যাওয়া লেগেই থাকে এ শহরে।
মথুরার স্থাপত্য দেখে বিস্মিত মামুদ। হিসেব কষে দেখলেন, এ রকম একটি সুন্দর নগরী তৈরি করতে দরকার হবে দুশো বছরের শ্রম ও দশ কোটি দিনার। এরপর বিস্ময়ের ঘোর কাটতেই সৈন্যদের মথুরাকে ধ্বংস করার আদেশ দিলেন মামুদ।
ঐতিহাসিক উইল ডুরান্ট জানাচ্ছেন, ---

ধ্বংস করে দেওয়া হলো মথুরার সমস্ত মন্দির, অট্টালিকার সারি, লুঠ করা হলো বিপুল রত্নভাণ্ডার। মথুরার বিখ্যাত ৯৮৩০০ মিসকাল ওজনের ( ১ মিসকাল হচ্ছে ১ সেরের একের ৬০০ ভাগ) খাঁটি সোণার একটি বেশ বড়ো মাপের বিগ্রহ ছিল। সুলতানের আদেশে ভেঙে দেওয়া হলো সেটি। আর ছিল ৪৫০ মিসকাল ওজনের একটি পদ্মরাগ বা নীলকান্ত মণি। এসব কিছুই সুলতানের রত্নভাণ্ডারকে সমৃদ্ধ করেছিল।
এ বিষয়ে "তবকৎ-ই-আকবরী"-তে জানাচ্ছেন খাজা নিজামুদ্দিন আহমেদ, ---
"...When the Sultan arrived in this city no one came forward to give him a battle; and the Sultan's army completely destroyed the city and burnt the temples and obtained boundless wealth. There was one golden idol, which was broken up under the orders of the sultan, which weighed 98, 300 Miskals of pure gold. সুলতান মামুদের ভারত আক্রমণের মূল্যায়ন করেছেন তাঁর দরবারের ঐতিহাসিক আল্-বিরুণী। তিনি লিখেছেন, ---মুসলিম অধিকৃত ভূখণ্ডের হিন্দুরা ধূলিকণায় পরিণত। ...হিন্দুরা তাদের সন্তানদের আমাদের সম্পর্কে, আমাদের পোশাক ও আচরণ নিয়ে ভয় দেখায়। তারা আমাদের শয়তানের সন্তান বলে এবং যা কিছু করে থাকি, সেসব কিছুকেই ভালো ও ন্যায্য কাজের উল্টো ভাবে।

অর্থাৎ, সোজা কথায়, সুলতান মামুদের সময় হিন্দুস্থানের হিন্দুরা তাদের ছোট ছোট ছেলেমেয়েদের মুসলিম আক্রমণকারীদের নাম করে ভয় দেখিয়ে শান্ত করতো।
সুলতান মামুদের নৃশংস আক্রমণ ও গণহত্যার ফলে উত্তর ভারতের পঞ্জাব অঞ্চলটি গজনীর দখলে চলে গিয়েছিল। তবে সুলতান মামুদের মৃত্যুর একশো বছর পর যখন ঘোর রাজ্যের শাসক আলাউদ্দিন হাসান গজনী আক্রমণ করে তাকে জ্বালিয়ে পুড়িয়ে প্রায় শ্মশানে পরিণত করেছিলেন, তখন গজনীর সুলতান বেরহাম গজনী অধিকৃত ভারতের লাহোরে পালিয়ে এসে আত্মরক্ষা করেছিলেন।
ওদিকে ভারতের অগণিত ধন-সম্পদ লুঠ করে সুলতান মামুদের সাজানো সাধের গজনীতে ঘোর শাসক আলাউদ্দিন হাসানের নির্দেশে চললো সাতদিন ধরে গণহত্যা, শেষে আগুন লাগিয়ে পুড়িয়ে দেওয়া হলো গজনী শহরকে। ভারত থেকে লুঠ করা সম্পদে সাজানো সুলতান মামুদের সাধের সাজানো গজনী শহরের অপমৃত্যু ঘটলো এভাবেই। এভাবেই ইতিহাসের পুনরাবৃত্তি ঘটেই থাকে বার বার।
