সুলতান মামুদ, বন্দি জয়পাল ও কাফের হত্যা
হিন্দুদের মনে হিংস্র আতঙ্ক ছড়িয়ে এগিয়ে চললো সুলতান মামুদের অভিযান। ১০০১ খ্রিস্টাব্দে ব্রাহ্মণশাহী বংশের রাজা জয়পালের (আ: ৯৬৫-১০০১ খ্রি: ) রাজ্য আক্রমণ করলেন সুলতান মামদ। খ্রিস্টিয় দশম শতাব্দীর শেষভাগে কাবুল থেকে অধুনালুপ্ত হাকরা নদীতীর পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত ছিল জয়পালের রাজ্য।
এর আগেও সুলতান মামুদের পিতা সবুক্তগীনকে বাধা দিয়েছিলেন জয়পাল। এবারেও বাধা দিলেন মামুদকে। কিন্তু যুদ্ধে পরাজিত হয়ে বন্দি হলেন জয়পাল। সুলতান মামুদ আদেশ দিলেন, শেকলে বাঁধা জয়পালকে প্রকাশ্য রাজপথে ঘোরানো হবে। তাঁর পুত্র ও অমাত্যরা নিজের চোখে দেখবে রাজার এই চরম দুর্গতি ও অপমান। সারা দেশে ছড়িয়ে পড়বে ইসলামের আতঙ্ক।
ঐতিহাসিক উইল ডুরান্ট জানাচ্ছেন, ---

শেষে 'কর' দেওয়ার শর্তে মুক্তি পান জয়পাল। কিন্তু এই অপমানের জ্বালা সহ্য করতে না পেরে নিজের হাতে চিতা জ্বালিয়ে তাতে ঝাঁপ দিয়ে আত্মবিসর্জন দেন তিনি।
এরপর ১০১৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সুলতান মামুদ আক্রমণ চালান চাঁদ রাইয়ের ওপর। এই আক্রমণ ও অত্যাচার মামুদের কাছে ছিল আনন্দের। অসংখ্য হিন্দু নিহত হয় সে যুদ্ধে, বাকিরা বন্দি হয়। সূর্য ও অগ্নির উপাসক কাফেরদের শেষ না করা পর্যন্ত চলে অভিযান।
ঐতিহাসিক উইল ডুরান্টের ভাষায়, ---

তবে জয়পাল জ্বলন্ত আগুনে নিজেকে শেষ করলেও মামুদের বিরুদ্ধে প্রবল বিক্রমে রুখে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন তাঁর পুত্র আনন্দপাল। মামুদের প্রায় তিন থেকে চার হাজার সৈন্য নিহত হয় আনন্দপালের আক্রমণে। সে কথা আগামীপর্বে।
