সুলতান মামুদের থানেশ্বর লুঠ
হিন্দুস্থানের বিরুদ্ধে জেহাদ ঘোষণা করে এক বিশাল সৈন্যবাহিনী তৈরি করেছিলেন সুলতান মামুদ। ক্রমে সুলতান মামুদের কাছে পৌঁছে গেল খবরটা, হিন্দুস্থানের থানেশ্বরে রয়েছে জাগরসম (Jagarsom) দেবের এক বিশাল মন্দির। সে মন্দির আক্রমণ করতে উদ্যোগী হলেন মামুদ। গুপ্তচরের মুখে সেকথা শুনলেন হিন্দুস্থানের ব্রাহ্মণশাহী রাজবংশের শাসক জয়পালের পুত্র। খবরটা পেয়ে মামুদের কাছে প্রস্তাব গেল, সুলতান এ অভিযান থেকে বিরত হলে তাঁকে ৫০ টি হাতি উপহার দেওয়া হবে।
মামুদ প্রত্যাখ্যান করলেন সে প্রস্তাব। শুরু করলেন থানেশ্বর অভিযান। এদিকে আগেই খবর পেয়ে লোকজন এলাকা ছেড়ে চলে যায়। থানেশ্বরে পৌঁছে মামুদ দেখেন, এলাকা জনশূন্য।
মামুদ বাহিনী অবাধে থানেশ্বরে লুঠপাট চালায়। বিধ্বস্ত করে দেয় রাজধানী। ভেঙে দেওয়া হয় অসংখ্য দেবদেবীর মূর্তি। জাগরসম দেবের মূর্তিটিকে সুলতান মামুদ তাঁর রাজ্য গজনীতে নিয়ে যান এবং সেখানে মূর্তিটিকে মসজিদের যাতায়াতের পথে বসানো হয়, যাতে মসজিদে আসা লোকজন সেটি পায়ে মাড়িয়ে আসা-যাওয়া করতে পারে।
"তবকৎ-ই-আকবরী"-তে একথা লিখেছেন খাজা নিজামুদ্দিন আহমেদ ----
"...He collected a large force with the object of carriying on a religious war, and in the year 402 A.H. marched towards Thaneswar. The son of Jaipal having received intelligence of this, sent an envoy and represented through him, ---that if the Sultan would relinquish this enterprise, he would send 50 elephants---as tribute. The Sultan paid no heed to this offer, and when he reached Thaneswar he found the city empty. The soldiers ravaged and plundered whatever they could lay hands upon, broke the idols and carried Jagarsom to Ghazni. ঐতিহাসিক লেন পুল (Lane Poole) বলছেন, মামুদ প্রতিজ্ঞা করেছিলেন, ফি বছর তিনি হিন্দুস্থানের কাফেরদের বিরুদ্ধে জেহাদি অভিযান চালাবেন। মামুদের দরবারের ঐতিহাসিক আল্-বিরুণী লিখেছেন, ভারতের সমৃদ্ধি সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করেছেন মামুদ। মুসলমানদের অধিকৃত অঞ্চল থেকে হিন্দু জ্ঞান-বিজ্ঞান কাশ্মীর, বারাণসীর মতো অমুসলিম অঞ্চলে আশ্রয় নিয়েছিল।
থানেশ্বরের পরে মামুদ লুঠ করেন পবিত্র হিন্দুতীর্থক্ষেত্র ভগবান বাসুদেবের জন্মস্থান বলে পরিচিত প্রাসাদনগরী মথুরা। আগামীপর্বে থাকছে থাকছে মামুদের সেই নৃশংস মথুরা অভিযানের ইতিবৃত্ত।
