History of India
war between puru vs alexander
There was no unity or pattern in the thirty thousand men Alexander brought to India, because they were mercenaries, Macedonian foot-soldiers or cavalry, Balkan or Thrace archers, Iranian or Central Asian cavalry, Phoenician or Egyptian sailors. The passage was difficult indeed. The Greek soldiers'first-hand experience of Indian warriors in the terrible battle with Puru had made Alexander's army not dare to venture beyond the Vysshas into the more difficult battlefields.
The territory between the Vitasta and Chandrabhaga rivers was the kingdom of Jyestha Puru. There were two Puru, so one is identified in history as "Jyestha Puru," the other as "Junior Puru." The one who fought valiantly with Alexander, as we know, was "Jyestha Puru," that is, "Senior Puru." On the other hand, "Junior Puru" or "Junior Puru" was the king of a small strip of land between the Chandrabhaga and the Irrawaddy rivers. Though he was a close relative of Senior Puru, there was no goodwill between the two. Alexander Jr. fled and took refuge with Nandaraja in Magadha when Alexander invaded Puru's kingdom.
Senior Puru confronts Alexander on the battlefield. At the end of the battle, Alexander asks Puru what treatment he expects from him. The six-and-a-half-foot tall senior Puru raises his head and gives the historic answer, like a king. Alexander asks Puru to explain. Puru replies, "Like a king," and he makes it clear that there is nothing new to be said. Alexander, satisfied with Puru's answer, returns his kingdom and presents him with a few more. Alexander realizes that he needs a brave friend like Puru to survive in India.
Alexander's favourite horse Bukifela died in battle with Puru. Alexander built two settlements on the banks of the Vitasta - Bukifela and Nikia. One of them was named after his favourite horse Bukifela. The fierce battle with Puru in the Karri wilderness on the eastern bank of the Vitasta river deeply moved Alexander's mind. To commemorate this battle, he minted a silver coin of sorts, with a male figure on one side. He was wearing a headscarf, body armour, a sword around his waist, a spear in one hand, and a thunderbolt in the other. Historians believe this to be a portrait of Alexander.
On the other side of the coin are two men on elephant backs. One of them is seen throwing a spear back at a rider who is running behind. The rider is also hitting the elephant with a long spear. According to historians, one of them is fat and the other is his bodyguard or mahout. Apart from these coins, two other types of coins reflect the scene of the Battle of Vistara. However, these coins were not found in India, but in Iran. < div > (-- Age of coinage: Bratindranath Mukherjee, pp. < ID1 >) < / div >.

Alexander could have met his end at the hands of Puru on the banks of the Vitasta if the weather had been favourable. Puru had more soldiers than Alexander. But it was the rainy season. So the archers could not aim with bows properly placed in the mud. He also arranged three hundred thick war chariots in front of the cavalry to strengthen the defences, which hindered free movement of the cavalry. The wheels of the chariots also sat in the mud because the mud was wet. The elephants could not be properly pinned behind the enemy. Puru's two sons died on the battlefield.
Yet the Paurava Kshatriya Puru fought alongside Alexander in the Karari Desert on the eastern bank of the Vitasta to secure the country's independence, a memorable chapter in history. Alexander's campaign was confined to western India. It took him about two and a half years to conquer this little part. He came to India in the summer of 327 BC, returning in the winter of 325 BC. While in India, his territories were subject to a rebellion. The Macedonian rule in India ended within five years of his death. Had it not been for the writings of Greek historians, Alexander's campaign in India would have been unknown.

For, there is no mention of Alexander's expedition to India in Indian literature or folklore. As is evident, Alexander's expedition to India left no mark on the minds of the people of this country. Neither of the two settlements that Alexander founded in Punjab, Bukifela and Nikia, became cities. Almost immediately after Alexander's return, the Greek inhabitants of these two places left. However, in terms of looting and killing, Alexander's expedition to India was comparable to those of later invaders to India, such as Sultan Mahmud, Timur the Long, Nader Shah, and Ahmad Shah Abdali.
Later in 324 BCE, the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya overthrew the Macedonians and established an independent kingdom in the lower Indus Valley. India was under Mauryan rule for about a hundred years. Many say Alexander died of wounds inflicted by a purulent arrow. His body was preserved in honey in Macedonia, Greece. But European historians are reluctant to let Alexander die in this way. European historians write that Alexander died in Babylon after suffering from a few days of malaria. Others say he died of poisoning. This will be the mystery of Alexander's death in the next episode.
