Rising Bengal Dhaka Bureau: Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of Bangladesh's independence, has been awarded India's prestigious Gandhi Peace Prize-2020 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the social, economic and political transformation of independent Bangladesh through the non-violent methods of Mahatma Gandhi.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India in New Delhi on 22 March (Monday) afternoon, it was stated that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize for his outstanding contribution to the inspiration of Bangladesh's independence, for his pioneering work in India-Bangladesh relations and for peace and stability in the region.
The Government of India has been awarding the Gandhi Peace Prize annually since 1995 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was awarded the prize in 2020 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi The jury for the Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
Other members of the jury apart from the Prime Minister are the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha The jury also includes Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Sulabh International Social Service Foundation founder Vindhyeshwar Pathak.

On 19 March 2021, after detailed deliberations in the Jury Board meeting, it was unanimously decided to confer the'Gandhi Peace Prize'on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the year 2020 Earlier recipients of the Gandhi Peace Prize include former President of Tanzania Julius Neuer, Dr Gerhard Fischer of Germany, Baba Amit of Ramakrishna Mission, former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The award was also jointly conferred on Vivekananda Kendra of India in 2015, Akshaya Patra Foundation and Sulabh International in 2016, Akal Awaib Trust of India in 2017, and Yohei Sasakawa of Japan in 2018.
