India has a strong stance at the UN on the issue of the return of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Thirumurthy, speaking at an unofficial meeting of the UN General Assembly, said that India has the greatest interest in resolving the issue as it is the only country to share a long border with both countries.
Regarding the situation in Myanmar, the UN said that recent developments in the country should ensure that progress made so far is not hindered, given that there are over 1 1 million Rohingya living in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, who fled Myanmar in 2013 following military action.
On the issue of displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar's Rakhine state, Tirumurti said India has the greatest interest in resolving the issue of return of displaced persons as it is the only country that shares a long border with Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Stressing the need for an early resolution of the issue, he said, "We are constantly advising our neighbours " India will continue to work with the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar to ensure that displaced people can return to their homes in Rakhine State, Myanmar, safely and at the earliest.
