এই মাছির প্রসঙ্গে কথা বলতে গিয়ে পতঙ্গবিদরা জানিয়েছে, সিকিমের আবহাওয়া এবং তাপমাত্রা এই পতঙ্গ বেড়ে ওঠার জন্য দায়ী। বর্তমানে আক্রান্তদের ওষুধ দেওয়া হয়েছে বলে জানা গিয়েছে। এই মাছিকে ড্রাগন পোকাও বলা হয়। এগুলোকে দেখতে হয় খানিকটা গুবরে পোকার মত। বৃষ্টিপ্রবণ অঞ্চলে এরা দ্রুত নিজেদের বংশবিস্তার ঘটায়।
এখানে জানিয়ে রাখি, নাইরোবি মাছি মানুষকে কামড়ায় না। হুলও ফোটায় না। তবে মানুষের গায়ের উপর বসলে ত্বকের ওপর এক ধরনের জ্বালা সৃষ্টি হয়। আসলে এই বিশেষ মাছি ত্বকের উপর বসার সময় এক ধরনের অম্ল নিঃসরণ করে, যার ফলে ত্বক পুড়ে যায়। এই বিশেষ পদার্থটিকে বলা হয় পেডারিন।
