বিজয়নগররাজ রাম রাজার নিহত হবার পর তাঁর সৈন্যদল ছত্রভঙ্গ হয়ে পড়ে। এই সুযোগে সুলতান বাহিনী হিন্দুদের পিছু ধাওয়া করে তাদের নির্বিচারে হত্যা করে। প্রায় ১ লক্ষ হিন্দু সৈন্যকে তারা হত্যা করে। তাদের রক্তে লাল হয়ে ওঠে কৃষ্ণা নদীর জল।
এরপর শুরু হয় বিজয়নগর লুঠ। অরক্ষিত রাজধানীতে ঢুকে অবাধে লুটপাট চালিয়ে সুলতান বাহিনী সোণা-রুপো, মূল্যবান রত্ন, হাতি-ঘোড়া, দাস-দাসী সবকিছুই হাতিয়ে নেয়। বিজয়নগরের অনুপম স্থাপত্য ধ্বংস করা হয়।

অর্থাৎ, সেদিন থেকে দীর্ঘ পাঁচ মাস পর্যন্ত শান্তি কি জিনিস, তা জানতো না বিজয়নগর। শত্রু ধ্বংস করতে এসেছে এবং তা বিরামহীনভাবে তারা করেছে। নির্মম, নির্দয়ভাবে নির্বিচারে হত্যাকাণ্ড চালিয়েছে। মন্দির ও সুউচ্চ অট্টালিকা ভেঙেছে। দু'একটি শক্ত পাথরের দুর্ভেদ্য মন্দির ও প্রাচীর ছাড়া আর কোনো কিছুর চিহ্নটুকুও নেই, রাজধানীর বুকে এমন বর্বর প্রতিহিংসা চরিতার্থ করেছে তারা। যে জায়গায় একসময় ছিল আকাশচুম্বী অট্টালিকা, সেখানে শুধুই রাশি রাশি স্তূপীকৃত ধ্বংসাবশেষ। ভেঙেছে অনবদ্য ভাস্কর্যের নিদর্শন মূর্তিগুলি।
এমনকি, একটিমাত্র পাথরে তৈরি বিশাল নৃসিংহদেবের চরণযুগলকেও ভেঙেছে তারা। আক্রমণকারীদের আক্রোশ থেকে কোনোকিছুই বাদ যায় নি। উঁচু মঞ্চের ওপর কারুকার্যমণ্ডিত যে মণ্ডপে দাঁড়িয়ে থেকে রাজা সমস্ত উৎসব দর্শন করতেন, সেটিও ভেঙেছে। নদীতীরবর্তী এলাকায় অবস্থিত জগৎ বিখ্যাত বিটলস্বামী মন্দির ও তার সংলগ্ন নান্দনিক প্রাসাদোপম অট্টালিকাগুলিও ভস্মীভূত করে দিয়েছে আক্রমণকারীরা। বহু মূল্যবান পাথরে খোদিত সুন্দর ভাস্কর্যগুলিও চূর্ণ করেছে তারা। তরবারি, কুঠার, শাবল ও আগুনের সাহায্যে দিনের পর দিন চলেছে এই ধ্বংসের তাণ্ডব। পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে এর আগে এরকম একটি পরিশ্রমী, সুখী ও সচ্ছল অধিবাসীদের উন্নত সমৃদ্ধশালী জনপদকে হঠাৎ করে এমনভাবে সম্পূর্ণ ধ্বংস করা হয়নি।
তবুও এত ধ্বংসের পরেও বিজয়নগরের মাটিতে ইসলামী স্থাপত্যের কোনো স্থায়ী নিদর্শন গড়ে ওঠেনি। এর প্রথম কারণ, বিজয়নগরের পরবর্তী শাসকরা সাম্রাজ্য উদ্ধার করেছিলেন। দ্বিতীয়ত, বিজয়নগরে মুসলিম বসতি ছিল অনেক কম। তৃতীয়ত, ইতিমধ্যে পোর্তুগীজরা আরব সাগরে নিজেদের আধিপত্য বিস্তার করে এবং তারা আরব থেকে নতুন করে সেনা আমদানি বন্ধ করে দেয়।
এর ফলে দাক্ষিণাত্যসহ গোটা ভারতের মাটিতেই মুসলিম অধিকৃত রাজ্যগুলি শুধুমাত্র দুর্গবিশেষ হিসেবেই টিকে ছিল। পরবর্তীকালে এ দেশের হিন্দু শাসকরা সম্ভাব্য সব জায়গায় আক্রমণ চালিয়ে হারানো রাজ্য পুনরুদ্ধার করেছেন।
