নাম "আমির তিমুর" হলেও "তৈমুর লঙ্" নামেই বেশি পরিচিত তিনি।"লঙ্" মানে "ল্যাংড়া" বা "খোঁড়া।" তৈমুরের একটি পা খোঁড়া ছিল বলে নামের শেষে "লঙ্" যোগ করে "তৈমুর লঙ্" বলা হতো তাঁকে।
১৩৯৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ডিসেম্বরে ইসলামে অবিশ্বাসীদের বিরুদ্ধে হিন্দুস্থানে জিহাদি অভিযান চালিয়ে একদিনেই এক লক্ষ বন্দি বিধর্মীকে হত্যা করেন এই খোঁড়া তৈমুর। নিজের আত্মজীবনী "মালফুজাত-ই-তিমুরী"-তে তিনি বলেছেন, হিন্দুস্থান আক্রমণ করে "গাজী" (শহীদ) হবার ইচ্ছে ছিল তাঁর।
ঐতিহাসিক লেন পুল বলেছেন, ---
"My object in the invasion of Hindustan is to lead a campaign against the infidels, to convert them to the true faith according to the command of Muhammad (on whom and his family be the blessing and peace of Good), to purify the land from the defilement of misbelief and Polytheism, and overthrow the temples and idols, whereby we shall be "Ghazis" and "Mujahids."-----Medieval India, Page-155: Lane Poole.
অর্থাৎ, আমার হিন্দুস্থান আক্রমণের উদ্দেশ্য হচ্ছে, কাফেরদের বিরুদ্ধে জেহাদ চালিয়ে মহম্মদের (তাঁর ও তাঁর পরিবারের উপর বর্ষিত হোক আল্লাহর কৃপা) নির্দেশ মতো তাদের সত্যধর্ম ইসলামে সামিল করা, অবিশ্বাস ও পৌত্তলিকতার পাপ থেকে দেশকে মুক্ত করা এবং মন্দির-বিগ্রহাদি ধ্বংস করা। এর ফলে আমরা "গাজী" ও "মুজাহিদ" হবো।
তাই হিন্দুস্থানের বিরুদ্ধে জিহাদ বা ধর্মযুদ্ধ চালিয়ে গণহত্যা করেন তৈমুর। উত্তর-পূর্ব সীমান্তে একটি ক্ষুদ্র হিন্দু রাজ্য ছিল কাটোর। হিন্দুস্থানের এই রাজ্যের ওপরেই প্রথম আক্রমণ চালান তৈমুর। বিশাল তৈমুর বাহিনীর হাত থেকে আত্মরক্ষার জন্য এখানকার লোকজন আশ্রয় নিলো দুর্গম পাহাড়ে। তবুও ওই অসহায় মানুষদের ওপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লো তৈমুর বাহিনী। গণহত্যা চালানো হলো তাদের ওপর। আহত হয়ে পালিয়ে গেল অনেকেই।
পরাজিত হিন্দু বাহিনীর কাছে সেনা কর্মকর্তা আক্ সুলতানকে পাঠানো হলো বিশেষ শর্তে। বলা হলো, ইসলাম কবুল করলে তাদের জীবনের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত। অগত্যা জীবন বাঁচাতে তারা সবাই ইসলাম ধর্ম নিলো। এরপর অবাধ্য অবিশ্বাসীদের কাটা মুণ্ডু দিয়ে পাহাড়ের ওপরে তৈরি করা হলো বিজয়স্তম্ভ। এক লক্ষ পৌত্তলিককে হত্যা করে তাদের কাটা মাথা দিয়ে অনেক জায়গায় তৈরি করেছিলেন বিজয়স্তম্ভ।

পরে রাজস্থানের ভাটনীর রাজ্যটি আক্রমণ করলেন তৈমুর। রাজপুত রাজা দুলচাঁদ প্রবলভাবে বাধা দিয়েও শেষ রক্ষা করতে পারলেন না। মাত্র এক ঘন্টার যুদ্ধে নিহত হলো ১০ হাজার রাজপুত সৈন্য। লুঠ করা হলো ধনাগার ও শস্যাগার। আগুনে পুড়ে ছাই হয়ে গেল দুর্গ ও সংলগ্ন সৌধ।
বিষয়ে তৈমুর তাঁর আত্মজীবনীতে লিখছেন, ---
