আল্-হাজ্জাজের সঙ্গে কাবুলের ভারতীয় শাসক রাটবিলের অনাক্রমণ চুক্তি অনুসারে তাঁর আমলে ভারতে কোনো আরব অভিযান ঘটেনি। আল্-হাজ্জাজের পর ৭১৫ খ্রিস্টাব্দে ইরাকের শাসক হোন এজিদ। এজিদের সঙ্গে রাটবিলের নতুন করে কোনো রকম চুক্তি স্বাক্ষরিত হয়নি। এর ফলে রাটবিল তাঁকে আর কোনো রকম 'কর' দেননি। এই সময় থেকে পরবর্তী দীর্ঘ ৪০ বছর কাবুলের ভারতীয় শাসকরা আরবদের কোনো রকম 'কর' প্রদান করেন নি। ভারতীয়রা সাময়িকভাবে অসফল হলেও আরবদের কাছে বশ্যতা স্বীকার করেন নি।
আরবরা প্রথম ভারত আক্রমণ করে ৬৪৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে। প্রথম ৭ বছর আরব বাহিনী ভারতের মাটিতে ঘাঁটি গাড়তে পারে নি। তাদের সব ক'টি অভিযানই ব্যর্থ হয়েছে। এরপর খলিফা আলী ও মুয়াইয়ার নেতৃত্বে আরবরা নতুন উদ্যমে ভারত আক্রমণ করে। সেনাপতি আব্দুর-রহমান-ইবন-সানুরার নেতৃত্বে আরব বাহিনী ভারতের পশ্চিম সীমান্ত অঞ্চলে কাবুলিস্থান ও জাবুলিস্থানে সাফল্য লাভ করে।
এরপর আরব খলিফা আল্-হাজ্জাজ ও সেনাপতি আব্দুর রহমানের মধ্যে বিরোধ শুরু হয় এবং এর জেরে পদচ্যুৎ হোন আরব সেনাপতি আব্দুর রহমান। ৬৭০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে পদচ্যুৎ আরব সেনাপতি আব্দুর রহমানের মৃত্যু হয়। এরপর পরবর্তী ৩০ বছর ভারতের মাটিতে আরব বাহিনীর শুধুই পরাজয়ের ইতিহাস। প্রায় ৫০ বছর ধরে অভিযান চালিয়ে ব্যর্থ হবার পরে ভারতের পশ্চিম সীমান্তে অবস্থিত কাবুলিস্থান (কাবুল) ও জাবুলিস্থান (জাবুল) রাজ্য দু'টি জয়ের আশা ছেড়ে দেয়। এর পরবর্তী দেড়শো বছর ভারতের পশ্চিম সীমান্তের এই দুটি ছোট রাজ্য নিজেদের শাসন ক্ষমতা ধরে রেখেছিল।
এর পিছনে ছিল খাইবার ও বোলান দু্র্ভেদ্য গিরিপথ। এই দুটি গিরিপথ প্রাকৃতিকভাবে প্রায় দুশো বছর ধরে কাবুল ও জাবুল রাজ্য দুটিকে বিদেশি আক্রমণ থেকে সুরক্ষিত রেখেছিল। কিন্তু ভারতীয়দের এই বিজয়ের ইতিহাস এ দেশের ঐতিহাসিকদের লেখায় নেই এবং এর জন্য মুসলিম ঐতিহাসিকদের লেখার ওপরেই আমাদের নির্ভর করতে হয়। তা না হলে দুশো বছর ধরে ভারতের দরজায় ইসলামকে বাধা দিয়েছিলেন যে সব ভারতীয় বীর যোদ্ধারা, তাঁদের কথা সোণার অক্ষরে লেখা থাকতো। এ কথা বলেছেন ঐতিহাসিক ড: রমেশচন্দ্র মজুমদার।
তাঁর ভাষায়, ---
"Unfortunately we have no indipendent evidence of the brave and heroic fights they put up for more than two hudred years, and our knowedge is entirely derived from the picture as pained by the hands of the victors. But even from the records of the Muhammadan writers we can have some idea of the wonderful skill and energy which they displayed against enormous odds, and the crushing and humiliating defeats which they not unoften inflicted upon the army of the Arabs. If India had her history the heroic deeds of these brave peoples, who defended her gates against Islam for two centuries, would probably have been written in letters of gold."
সত্যিই ভারতীয়দের এই বীরত্বের ইতিহাস আজও প্রায় অনালোচিত এক অধ্যায়। ভারতীয় ইতিহাস লেখক থাকলে এমনটা হবার কথা ছিল না। তবুও সমসাময়িক তথ্য প্রমাণ এদেশের পশ্চিম সীমান্তে ভারতীয়দের দুশো বছরের বীরত্বকেই প্রতিষ্ঠিত করে।
