সামরিক শক্তি, বৈভব ও অনুপম স্থাপত্যে সমৃদ্ধ দক্ষিণ ভারতের বিজয়নগর ছিল এক সত্যিকারের বীরের সাম্রাজ্য। এই শক্তিশালী বিজয়নগর ছিল পাশাপাশি মুসলমান শাসিত রাজ‍্যগুলির আতঙ্কের কারণ। আর সেজন্য দক্ষিণের মুসলমান শাসিত রাজ‍্যগুলির সঙ্গে বিজয়নগরের দীর্ঘদিনের শত্রুতা ছিল।

তবে বিজয়নগরের সঙ্গে শত্রুতার পাশাপাশি স্থানীয় মুসলমান শাসকদের মধ‍্যেও ছিল অন্তর্দ্বন্দ্ব। আর এই অন্তর্দ্বন্দ্বে মুসলমান শাসকরা বিজয়নগরের শক্তিশালী শাসক রামরাজার সাহায্য নিতেন। যেমন, হুসেন নিজাম শাহ যখন আদিল শাহের রাজ‍্য আক্রমণ করেন, তখন তিনি বিজয়নগরের শাসক রামরাজার সাহায্যে সে আক্রমণ প্রতিহত করেন।
এরপরের দৃশ্যপট পাল্টে যায়। চিরশত্রু হুসেন নিজাম শাহ নিজের কন্যা চাঁদ বিবির সঙ্গে আদিল শাহ এবং পুত্র মুরতাজের সঙ্গে আদিল শাহের বোনের বিয়ে হয়ে যায়। আর তারপরেই শুরু হয় ধর্মযুদ্ধের প্রস্তুতি।

এ বিষয়ে ঐতিহাসিক রবার্ট শেওয়েল জানাচ্ছেন, ---

"The marriage were celebrated in due course, and the Sultanas began their preparations for the holy war."---A Forgotten Empire, Page-199: Robert Sewell.

রামরাজার সঙ্গে আদিল শাহের বন্ধুত্ব ছিল। সেজন্য বন্ধুর বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ শুরুর আগে একটি অজুহাতের দরকার ছিল। এজন্য আদিল শাহ কয়েকটি জেলা দাবি করে দূত পাঠালেন রামরাজার কাছে। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সে দৌত‍্য ব‍্যর্থ হয়। আর তারপরেই মুসলমান শাসকরা যুদ্ধের আয়োজন করেন।

ঐতিহাসিক রবার্ট শেওয়েল বলছেন, ---

"As he expected, Ramraja expelled the ambassador in a very disgraceful manner from his court; and the united Sultans now hastened the preparations to crush the common enemy of the Islam faith."----A Forgotten Empire, Page-199: Robert Sewell.

পরের ঘটনা ১৫৬৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ২৫ শে ডিসেম্বর। ওইদিন হুসেন নিজাম শাহ, আলী আদিল শাহ, ইব্রাহিম কুতুব শাহ ও আলীবর্দ---এই চার সুলতান জোট বেঁধে আক্রমণ করলেন বিজয়নগর রাজ‍্য। তার চেয়েও বড়ো সেনাবাহিনী নিয়ে বিজয়নগরের শাসক রামরাজা হাজির হোন যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে। সম্মিলিত সুলতান বাহিনীর সামনে রাখা ছিল ১২ জন ইমামের পতাকা। ধর্মযুদ্ধের প্রতীক হিসেবেই যে তা রাখা হয়েছিল, বলাই বাহুল্য। এই যুদ্ধ তালিকোটার যুদ্ধ নামে পরিচিত।
যদিও রামরাজা ছিলেন ৯৬ বছরের প্রবীণ, তবুও দুর্জয় সাহস ও প্রবল আত্মবিশ্বাসে ভরপুর এই মানুষটি তারুণ্যের উন্মাদনায় উন্মত্ত। তালিকোটার যুদ্ধে রামরাজার জয় নিশ্চিত ছিল। কিন্তু শেষে অমাত‍্যদের নিষেধ অগ্রাহ্য করে সেনাবাহিনীকে উৎসাহিত করতে তিনি পাল্কিতে চেপে তাদের সামনে হাজির হলেন। শেষে নিশ্চিত জয়ের মুখে হুসেন নিজাম শাহের সৈন্যদের ছোঁড়া একটি কামানের গোলার আঘাতে তিনি নিহত হলেন।

ঐতিহাসিক খাজা নিজামুদ্দিন জানাচ্ছেন, ---

"...and it was likely that the four rulers should meet with a defeat when by an act of fate, a cannon ball, shot from the army of Nizamul-Mulk, hit Ramraj and killed him."----Tabaqat-I-Akbari, Vol. III, Page-142-143: Khwajah Nizamuddin.

অন্যদিকে, এ বিষয়ে রবার্ট শেওয়েল বলছেন, ---

"The battle becoming more general, the Hindus opened a desolating fire from a number of field pieces and rocket batteries. The left and right of the Muhammadan line were pressed back after destructive hand to hand fighting...A second attack by the Hindus on the guns in the centre seemed likely to complete the overthrow of the whole Muhammadan line, when the front rank of pieces was fired at close quarters...and this proved so destructive that 5000 Hindus were left dead on the field...when an elephant belonging to the Nizam Shah, wild with the excitement of the battle, dashed forward towards him (Ram Raja) and the litter-bearers let fall their precious burden in terror at the animal's approach. Before he had time to recover himself and mount a horse, a body of the allies was upon him, and he was seized and taken prisoner...Ram Raja was conducted by the officer who commanded the artillery of Hussain Nizam to his Sultan, who immediately ordered his captive to be decapitated, and the head to be elevated on a long spear, so that it might be visible to the Hindu troops."----A Forgotten Empire, Page-204-205: Robert Sewell.

অর্থাৎ, বিজয়নগরের সৈন্যদের তীব্র গোলাবর্ষণ ও হাতাহাতি যুদ্ধে সুলতান বাহিনী ছত্রভঙ্গ হয়ে পিছু হঠতে বাধ্য হয়। তাদের পরাজয় প্রায় নিশ্চিত। এমন সময় হুসেন নিজাম শাহের সেনাবাহিনীর গোলা বর্ষণে বিজয়নগরের বহু সৈন্য হতাহত হয়। হঠাৎ হুসেন নিজাম বাহিনীর একটি হাতে উন্মত্ত হয়ে ছুটে আসে রামরাজার দিকে, পিছনে মুসলিম অশ্বারোহী বাহিনী।

বিজয়নগরের সৈন্যদের মধ্যে দেখা দেয় বিশৃঙ্খলা। পাল্কি বাহকের দল পাল্কি ফেলে পালায়। রামরাজা ঘোড়ায় চড়তে পারেননি বা আত্মরক্ষার সুযোগ পাননি। তাঁকে বন্দি করে আনা হয় হুসেন নিজাম শাহের সামনে এবং সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তাঁকে হত্যার আদেশ দেওয়া হয়। হিন্দুরা যাতে দূর থেকে দেখতে পায়, সেজন্য তাঁর কাটা মাথা একটি লম্বা বর্শার ডগায় গেঁথে দেওয়া হয়। এভাবেই শেষ হয় তালিকোটার যুদ্ধ।
